Five ways to make your money go further in 2019

2019 is looming, so what are you think about for next year? Is it a new something or is to achieve a few life goals – or perhaps a healthy mix of both?

When all the money seems to be heading out instead of in, it’s easy to think that some of those dreams and hopes are unrealistic. But they’re really not – they just need you to make a few concessions and perhaps some changes to your life.

#1 Sort out your credit cards

Like most of the NZ population your credit cards will probably have taken a huge hit over the last month or two. In the new year, take a look at what the banks are offering for you to move your account – it’s really not a hassle and it’s a simple way to save a whole heap of money.

#2 Learn to love a budget

Take a look at your spending and use it to develop a budget for you and/or your whole family. Dropping a coffee a week or reducing your weekend spending by $20 can add up over a year. Perhaps this year you use public transport a little more rather than always taking a taxi or Uber.

#3 Start using cash more

On a Monday put an agreed amount of money in your wallet/purse and then just use that all week. When it’s gone, it’s gone!

#4 Shop around

Changing your food habits can make a real impact on your budget. Cut out some meat from your weekly shop to not only feel healthier but also save some money. Shop around for your food, using local farm shops/fruit and veg shops rather than simply buying everything from one supermarket.

#5 Try new things

Find cool things to do at the weekends that are fun and don’t have to cost money. We’re blessed to live in an amazing country – get out there are explore it by foot or by bike. Check out what’s on in your community by keeping an eye on your local council websites – there are heaps of free concerts, activities and fun days to get involved in over the summer.
